Ruby^®Mushroom is the commercial name of a Taiwanese fungus named Antrodia camphorata
Ruby^® Mushroom, the Antrodia camphorata (synonym: Antrodia cinnamomea, Chinese name: Chang-chihor niu -chang -chih) is a mushroom (polyporaceae, Aphyllophorales) exclusively from Taiwan. The mushroom was first identified and published as a new species by Zang and Su (1990) as Ganoderma camphoratum. Chang and Chou (1995) later described the species as Antrodia cinnamomea and renamed as Antrodia camphorata (AC) in 1997 by Chang et
al. (Bot. Bull. Acad. Sin. (1997) 38: 273-275). Chang and Chou (Bot. Bull. Acad. Sin. (2004) 45: 347-352) again restore the name to Antrodia cinnamomea. The name was changed so often that many papers published in recent years still use the name "Antrodia camphorata", in order to prevent confusions, many other companies including Simpson Biotech still use the "old name" Antrodia camphorata. The fruiting body of Antrodia camphorata is normally parasitic on the inner cavity of the endemic species Cinnamomum kanehirai Hay (an law-protected evergreen exclusively growth in Taiwan); therefore the mushroom is also exclusively available in Taiwan. The fruiting bodies of Antrodia camphorata still cannot be cultivated unless using the law-protected evergreen as the raw material. Due to the increasing demand for uses as folk medicine and limited supply of the fruiting body, current market price exceeds US $55,000/kg dry wt. that makes the mushroom probably the most expensive mushrooms in the world.
*Traditional usages of Antrodia camphorata:*
The native Taiwanese first notice that this mushroom is perfect for alcoholic hangover releasing and later on use it for food and drug intoxication. After being used for years, the mushroom is now believed to be one the most potent liver-protection herbs in Taiwan. The fruiting bodies have been used for treating of food and drug intoxication, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypertension, itchy skin, and liver cancer ("The Use and the Effect of Ganoderma". 1985, San Yun Press, Taichung. Current scientific researches:
Modern academic research about the efficacies of Antrodia camphorata as searched by the PubMed databsas (upto April, 2007) are: hepatoprotective, anti-inflammation, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-hypertension, anti-heptitis B virus and neuroprotective activies. According to Dr. Masao Hattori from Toyama University (Japan), five new maleic and succinic acid derivatives compounds (Hepasim^®) were first isolated from the mycelia of Antrodia camphorata (J. Nat. Prod. 2004, 67, 46-48). Following studies indicated that Hepasim^® were identified to be the active hepatoprotective compound in a fulminant hepatitis animal model. Dr. Hattori later isolated a new neutral-polysaccharide (Mw: 1290 Kd) from the water extract of Antrodia camphorata mycelia and indicated that this is another active compound response for the fulminant hepatitis improvement in that same animal model.
